Special features
The truss bridge in Sneek is one of the first buildings worldwide, where Accoya wood is used for strucutre material. The acetylated pine wood needs no further constructional wood protection. This heavy-load bridge in Fryslan in the northern part of the Netherlands has a unique design. The extraordinary concept puts the stress on solidity, making the use by 60-tonne vehicles seem plausible. In form, the bridge is following the style of the historic water gate – Sneek’s landmark – consisting of a complex curved shell with a Gothic arch. The building components are fabricated from glued laminated timber curved along two axes. The need for a long life cycle of the exposed components led to the use of an innovation in timber construction, which had not been used to such an extent before: raw timber made from acetylated pine wood.
